Dale Johnson | Pier Energy | Oil on canvas | 2003
I often stand alone on this Grand Haven Pier watching storms come in across Lake Michigan. As I painted the storm rolling in, I should have heeded the warning of the fishermen who left the pier first. The sailboat on the right was hurrying but didn’t make it in safely and capsized in front of me as I was painting. They intended to go out for a sail unaware of the storm. As they came about I watched the sails go deep into the channel. I had my own problems to contend with on my own canvas sail and was forced to stop painting.
