Artist Statement
As an immigrant born to Pakistani parents and raised in Nigeria, I have a desire to connect with others in order to establish roots and a sense of belonging. Before attending art school, I practiced medicine and experienced motherhood. Human interaction was what I enjoyed the most about being a physician. Making art continues that dialogue on a new level and satisfies my creative urges. Art creates an active bond between artist and viewer. I transmit some essence of myself through the work. I see the viewer as one who recognizes this essence in himself/herself and through this recognition completes the connection.
My art explores human relationships, universal values and life experiences. The phrase “to walk a mile in another’s moccasins” is a familiar one. The Other is a series of interactive sculptures that issue a similar invitation to viewers. Two of the six works in this series are on display.
